1. Talk me through your safe isolation procedure, exactly as you do it.

Why they ask it: Skipped isolation is how electricians die, and any missing step in the answer ends the interview in the interviewer's head.

Give the full sequence without prompting: identify the circuit and point of isolation, isolate and lock off with your own lock and retain the key, post the warning notice, prove the voltage indicator on a known source or proving unit, test the circuit dead on all combinations (line to neutral, line to earth, neutral to earth), then re-prove the indicator. Mention your tester is GS38-compliant. Adding a real moment, such as finding a borrowed neutral still live on a circuit you had isolated, shows the procedure is habit rather than recital.

2. On an EICR you find socket circuits with no RCD protection, and one circuit with a Zs above the maximum. How do you code each?

Why they ask it: EICR coding judgement separates electricians who inspect from electricians who guess, and inconsistent coding creates legal exposure for the firm.

Reason it aloud: the high Zs means the protective device may not disconnect in time, potentially dangerous, C2. Missing RCD protection on socket circuits is generally C3, improvement recommended, under current best practice guidance, though context such as sockets serving outdoor equipment can raise the severity. Reference the coding guide you work to (Electrical Safety First's best practice guide) and the principle: C1 danger present, C2 potentially dangerous, C3 non-compliant but not dangerous. 3. What tests do you carry out on a new circuit before energising, and in what order?

Why they ask it: Dead testing order exists for safety reasons, and testing out of sequence reveals shallow training.

Walk the sequence with reasons: continuity of protective conductors, ring final circuit continuity where applicable, insulation resistance at 500V DC (expecting well above 1 megohm and investigating anything low), polarity dead, then energise for earth fault loop impedance, prospective fault current, RCD tests and functional checks. Give an example of a fault caught in sequence, such as an insulation resistance of 0.3 megohms tracing to a cable nicked by a plasterboard fixing, found before it ever went live. Naming the numbers you expect makes the competence audible.

4. Tell me about a time you refused to do something on a job, or stopped work.

Why they ask it: The trade's worst outcomes come from people who kept going under pressure, and the employer needs evidence you will not be one of them.

Pick a real refusal with the pressure named: a site agent wanting a circuit energised before testing so other trades could carry on, or a customer asking you to leave an unearthed metal light fitting because the ceiling was freshly painted. Cover how you refused: explaining the specific danger in plain words, offering the compliant alternative and what it would cost in time, and putting it in writing when the pushback continued. An ending with the relationship intact is ideal, but the non-negotiable part is that you held the line.

5. What is your experience across domestic, commercial and industrial work, honestly?

Why they ask it: The three environments need different competences, and overclaiming gets exposed on the first job with three-phase distribution or a fire alarm interface.

Map your real experience: for example, four years domestic (rewires, consumer unit changes, EV charger installs on PME supplies and the earthing considerations they bring), two years light commercial (office fit-outs, emergency lighting, three-phase boards), and honest limits ("I have not done HV switching or motor control beyond DOL starters"). Interviewers respect precise limits because the alternative is discovering them on site. Mention specialist tickets: 2391, EV charging (2921), solar, fire alarms, IPAF.

6. You are sent for a small job and uncover something worse. What do you do?

Why they ask it: Scope surprises are weekly in this trade, and both wrong instincts, walking past danger or inventing work, cost the company.

Structure: make the immediate situation safe, document with photos, then communicate before working: the customer or office gets a clear explanation of what you found and why it matters, with a price or recommendation, and dangerous findings go in writing even if the customer declines the work. A worked sketch: sent to add a socket, you find thermal damage at the consumer unit from a loose main switch connection; you isolate, photograph, and get authorisation for the repair rather than quietly invoicing it or ignoring it. The employer is listening for safety and commercial honesty at once.

7. How do you keep current with BS 7671 and its amendments?

Why they ask it: The regs move, and an electrician working to a superseded edition creates liability on every certificate they sign.

Be specific: the amendment course you sat, how you track changes (IET updates, wholesaler CPD evenings, trade press), and one change you have actually applied on the tools, such as AFDD requirements in higher-risk residential buildings or current SPD provision rules.
