UK CV Personal Statement: what it is + examples that work
The 50-80 words at the top of your CV that decide whether the rest gets read.
The formula
[Role + years] + [strongest proof with a number] + [what you bring to the target role]. Every sentence must survive the "so what" test, if a claim has no evidence attached, cut it or evidence it.
Weak (reads like everyone)
"Hard-working and passionate professional with excellent communication skills and a proven track record. A motivated team player looking for an exciting new challenge."
Strong (reads like one person)
"Retail operations manager of 8 years, most recently running a 40-person store that moved from bottom-quartile to top-10% in the region on customer satisfaction in 18 months. Now looking to bring that turnaround experience to an area manager role."

- Graduate: "Economics graduate (2:1, University of Leeds) with placement-year experience in FP&A at a FTSE 250 retailer, where a pricing analysis was adopted across 12 stores. Seeking a first analyst role in commercial finance."

What is a personal statement on a UK CV?
A three-to-four line paragraph at the top of your CV summarising who you are professionally, your strongest relevant achievements, and what you are looking for. In the UK it replaces the American "resume objective" and is also called a professional summary or personal profile.
Is a CV personal statement the same as a UCAS personal statement?
No. A CV personal statement is 50-80 words at the top of a job application CV. A UCAS personal statement is a separate document of up to 4,000 characters for university admissions, answering structured questions about why you want to study a course. Same name, entirely different documents.
What should I avoid in a personal statement?
Empty adjectives with no evidence: "hard-working", "passionate", "team player". Every recruiter has read them thousands of times. Replace claims with specifics: instead of "experienced marketer", write "marketer of 6 years who grew organic traffic 240% at two B2B SaaS companies".
