Should you put a photo on your UK CV? (No - here's why)
One of the clearest conventions in UK hiring, and one of the most common mistakes from international applicants.
Why the rule exists
The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful for UK employers to discriminate on protected characteristics including age, race, sex, religion and disability, several of which a photo reveals instantly. A CV with a photo therefore creates evidence-trail risk in any later discrimination claim. Many HR teams sidestep the problem mechanically: photographed CVs are removed or the photo stripped before screening.
Applicant tracking systems add a practical reason: photos confuse CV parsers, and a CV that parses badly can be mis-ranked before a human ever sees it.
Where the conventions differ
- No photo: UK, Ireland, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
- Photo traditional (but fading): Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, much of continental Europe and Asia.
- The rule: follow the convention of the country you are applying in, not the one you are from.
